Conversation Café is back!!!
We have moved once more hopefully to a more permanent location in the grottes. We are at the Maison Verte - located just behind the train station on the Place de Grottes on Rue de Grottes. A great new community location on the plaza with a small yard and a bar/cafe and without having to end so early. Please come stop by.

Converstion Café creates a fun and social setting to practice French (including ot...her languages) and come together in a community environment no matter if you are a native speaker or a beginner. It is volunteer run, informal and has been meeting semi-regularly since 2007 in Geneva.

We are a group of Geneva residents, students, artists, professionals and expats, who need more time to practice speaking French in an unstructered, informal space with new and old friends alike! It´s not like any language instruction activity you've ever been to.

Beginners and native speakers welcome. No entry fee, and no need to RSVP, just pass by between 19.30H and 24H. We decide a theme for each week, which can be some ethnic snack, or special cocktail which we learn to make with authentic ingredients.

We will continue our outdoor grilling theme this next week with making meat and vegetables on the grill. We will also be wishing one of our most excellent supporters a farewell as she will be heading off on a new adventure.

Lighting up inside, no problem thanks to an inverted IKEA trash can at the end 3m. x 30cm. of exhaust tubing. During it´s first week in action over 100kg. of bread, chapatis, and pizzas were made, together with batata doce! 25kg capacity or space for 8 pizzas 25cm.

Together with members of the RDA 69 in Lisbon, the construction of a traditional bread oven begins, indoor. Recycled brick, cob and new refractory bricks for the floor of the oven are used. The oven will soon be completed with more cob for insulation and shaping, then a layer of wool, followed by the final thin layer of ´cal vivo´. There will also be a metal chimney for moving smoke through the wall on the right.

Lyon Conference

´Puntos´ presented in discussion about Argentinian community currency movement. These notes typically expired after 4 months and could be redeemed for new ones after a nominal devaluation was acccounted for, encouraging users to exchange them.

The prevelance and frequency of exchange of these currencies in Argentina diminished after the economic situation improved.

Tamera, Forno do Pão

The "Healing Biotope 1 Tamera" in Southern Portugal is an international training and experimental site for the development of peace research villages and healing biotopes worldwide. Under the motto "Think Locally, Act Globally," approximately 200 people live, work and study in Tamera. Tamera’s aim is to develop an example of a model for a nonviolent co-existence of people and between people and nature. The main tasks of Tamera are: the education of young people within the "Monte Cerro" peace study, the building of a village model called "Solar Village" which produces its own food and solar energy, and global networking under the name of GRACE´.

Together with the Tamera community, we built a traditional style bread oven in the Solar Village, just in time for Easter! The base is assembled from locally available stone. The dome interior is 1.4m diameter and made from refractory bricks. On the outside sand and clay were combined to form an adobe for insulation. A waterproof layer is also added as the oven is exposed to the elements.

Using XMind´s social brainstorming tool, Lisbon´s Tertulia Liberdade is creating an ´Economy Mind Map´to help our group visualize the complex relationships between seperate elements comprising any local economy. Members may download the map, add or edit the ideas, and upload new versions. Specifically we are working on the theme ´Escravatura Moderna´ or ´modern slavery´.

Once you get to your destination using Couchsurfing will help you find short term lodging with the community of 'couchsurfers' worldwide. I have met many cool people from the couchsurfing community during my recent stay in Lisbon. They also have regular community building and cultural activities, which are fantastic!

Reality Check / Perception and Communication Exercise

What is your picture of the world? How can you reflect upon it by yourself, and communicate your perception to others? These are just a few of the questions we raised during discussions about how we view ourselves interacting with the world. It's bit of a challenge to uncover, so Reality Check was developed as a tool to assist in this discovery, and is currently in beta, in playing card form. Over 200 participants or 'Actors' have used Reality Check, and through their participation have helped develop the current beta edition, most recently edited in mid-2009.

Currently there are 36 seperate 'Topic Cards' representing the common 'ideas' that we have about our individual world's components. When people lay the cards out face up they see a picture representing the topic, and a word (in 6 languages) that denotes the topic. They then 'arrange' the cards in a two dimensional mandala or 'mind map' to create their particular version of reality.

Reality Check is great for opening up a conversation about how we really think our individual reality appears, and is being used in it's beta by people in all disciplines to communicate with others. Interestingly, the cards fall into four top level perception fields. Surprisingly, many of the ideas we have been taught to include in our world view, have never been introduced by uninitiated 'Actors'.

One of the most enjoyable cultural experiences is to be in the company of local musician friends as they create new music. Creating a space where local musicians can gather and work on new material, all of this in an open environment friendly to improvisation, is delightful for both musician and listener alike. These sessions are usually held in a public venue so the musician's friends are welcome to attend. While there is no commercialization of the event itself, the location often distributes 'bons' to the musicians to redeem at the bar for refreshments....

It's a good idea to find a space that can accomodate up to 100 people and where music is regularly played. Most venues will entertain hosting the weekly activity on an 'off' night, Thursday is the favorite.

Free Shop / Umsonstladen

There are quite a number of 'free shops' located in communities around the world. Not charities, these spaces are managed by communities members to serve as a type of 'open attic' where articles in good condition are available to others at no charge. There is no accounting necessary and anyone can take the things they need or deposit the things they no longer require. Sound interesting? The shops are easy to set up and manage, just find some space that can be opened up to the community and voila, start your own version of the 'Free Shop'!

Freecycle is an online version of the Free Shop concept ''It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills.'' I once found a perfectly good computer for a friend in Geneva using Freecycle.

Portugal 2010 Oven projects

By spring 2010 there are two small communities in Portugal who are interested in adding a traditional style oven to their properties. Photos and details will be added as site visits ensue through March.

The book 'The Bread Builders' by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott is adding some great technical background to upcoming projects.
